As the night falls, freshen up in the en-suite bathroom with a luxury soak in the Jacuzzi bath before getting settled in the king-size bed. To the outside is a pretty patio area where you can relax at the bench and ponder on the holiday thus far. Bothy is a splendid escape, whatever time of year. Alston, the highest market town in England, is located in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by a distinctive scenery of moorland, hills, rivers, and waterfalls. Oliver Twist and Jane Eyre were both produced by ITV in this charming village with its cobblestone alleys and unique nooks and crannies. Artists and authors have long been inspired by Alston and the North Pennines; W H Auden adored the area, and Alston continues to be an inspiration to the local crafters. The town is home to several unique stores, including galleries and shops with fine crafts. Take a ride on one of the meticulously restored steam or diesel trains on the South Tynedale Railway, which runs from Alston to Slaggyford, through the breathtaking beauty of the South Tyne valley. Additionally regarded as one of England's best salmon rivers, the River Tyne offers local day-ticket fishing. The Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a terrific family day out with interactive exhibitions. The North Pennines used to be one of the richest lead mining centres in Europe. This makes a fantastic base because northern Cumbria, County Durham, and Northumberland are all easily accessible, and the A686 is one of the world's top drives according to the AA.

Owners really hospitable with nice touches, such as fresh eggs and scones and jam (which were delicious). Was sad to leave.

The Bothy was cosy and quirky. Mark and Jo made us so welcome. The cottage is well thought out with stylish fixtures and fittings. The little touches of eggs, homemade scones and jam on arrival were delicious. It was delightful to listen to the birdsong, see the birds feeding in the garden and a red squirrel made his visits too! The surrounding countryside is stunning. Whether you enjoy walking or just want to relax and recharge your batteries, I would thoroughly recommend booking here. PS I say this after taking self catering holidays in the North of England and Scotland for over 30 years.
