About this property

Ashbourne 4.7 miles. Situated in the picturesque hamlet of Atlow with simply stunning views of the Derbyshire Dales is Postbox Cottage. Just a short drive from the market town of Ashbourne, with a cobbled marketplace, hidden alleys and a wealth of independent shops, restaurants, coffee shops and pubs. This homely, detached, stone-fronted cottage is aptly named after the post-box embedded in one of the walls, and benefits from off-road parking, breath-taking vistas across the Dales and charming original features, perfect for friends, families or couples looking to explore the countryside with walks throughout the year. The front door opens into the entrance porch (great for muddy wellies), with a handy cloakroom, and gives access to the well-equipped country-style kitchen/diner, and a welcome pack with local produce. Limestone steps lead to an inviting sitting room with a leather sofa, armchair, oak flooring, beamed ceiling, and French doors to the terrace. A welcoming snug also rests on the ground floor, a private haven for those wishing to escape. A walk-in shower room featuring a heated towel rail completes the downstairs layout. Upstairs leads to the landing with a family bathroom, and family bedroom with a double and two single beds for your nightly rest. Outside is an enclosed garden/patio and ample parking; you can enjoy the sunsets behind the lush rolling hills or wrap-up and take a hot chocolate outside to stargaze. A stunning circular walk from Postbox Cottage takes in the quaint hamlet of Atlow, or you could take a slight detour to the traditional country pub, the Red Lion in Hognaston, for a bite to eat. On the doorstep is Carsington Water, one of Derbyshire’s most important tourist attractions. Walking and cycling trails through woodland and wildlife meadows, along with a picnic area, adventure playground, and wildlife discovery centre are awaiting to be enjoyed. A courtyard of small shops, ice cream parlour and café are nearby if you are hungry, or why not try the excellent Mainsail Restaurant, with spectacular views over the water. Carsington also has a fantastic water sports centre where you can hire paddle boards, rowing boats, and sit-on-top kayaks, along with cycle hire. No stay would be complete without visiting Matlock Bath, known as the seaside town without the sea; fantastic fish and chips, ice cream, rock and sweet shops are available along with its own cable car ride and theme park. Wirksworth is a hidden gem of a historic market town, home to a bustling high street, heritage railway and quirky Northern Lights Cinema, or head to Belper, an award-winning market town in Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, with its thriving local music and arts scene, and picturesque riverside gardens to explore. A short drive away you’ll also locate the iconic Chatsworth Estate, a stately home, gardens, and farmyard, along with the biggest theme park in the UK, Alton Towers, CBeebies land and water park. Postbox Cottage is the perfect base to explore the hills and Dales of the Derbyshire countryside with an abundance of walks and cycling trails, together with a vast array of attractions and pretty villages, there is simply something for everyone.

Ashbourne, which is located at the southernmost point of the Peak District, is the epitome of an English market town, complete with a market place with stalls, an unusual street layout, winding cobblestone lanes, coaching inns, and almshouses. The town was a sophisticated social hub during its heyday in the 18th century, and many lovely Georgian structures from this time period still stand today. The town is still known as something of a sanctuary for antique hunters today and still has a lot to offer in terms of restaurants and inns, but don't expect a deal! The Dove and Manifold Valleys are nearby for those who prefer more outdoor activities, while Alton Towers, with its thrilling collection of thrills and attractions, is only a short drive away for thrill seekers.

Open it up and feel like your in fields themselves or shut it up and be in your own cosy hideaway. Jane kept us up to date prior to our arrival plus left us an amazing welcome pack with information and treats! Great walk round Carsington water just 5 mins up the road.

Communication with Jane prior to our stay was excellent and the welcome pack left for our arrival was very generous. The cottage was spotless and very warm and cosy. It was well equipped with everything you needed. We didn’t want to leave but will be back.
