Snaptrip says

The Mizzen in Port Isaac is praised for its superb location and cleanliness, with guests enjoying the proximity to local attractions and the coastal path. The cottage's charm and the friendliness of the town are noted, although some guests mention maintenance issues and a lack of basic provisions.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The property is generally described as clean and tidy, which suggests good housekeeping standards. However, there are isolated comments about specific areas needing attention.

The central location in Port Isaac is highly appreciated for its convenience and the amazing views nearby, despite the challenging access for vehicles and the elderly.

Guests find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy for four adults, but some furniture and the water pressure in showers are noted as areas for improvement.

While the property is well-equipped with a washing machine and dishwasher, guests report maintenance issues with appliances, guttering, and general upkeep. The lack of parking and steep stairs are also mentioned.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts, so it is not possible to provide a score in this category.

About this property

Perched in the centre of the historic fishing village of Port Isaac, is this fabulous, four-bedroom cottage, The Mizzen. Enjoying a superb location with easy access to some of the most beautiful beaches in Cornwall, as well as a stylish open-plan layout with contemporary furnishings, The Owner has recently made some beautiful sympathetic upgrades to the property in 2023, including new furniture, decorated throughout and renovations to the courtyards. The Mizzen makes for a wonderful dwelling for a group or family of six looking for a coastal escape to Cornwall. Be welcomed into the generous open-plan living space, where you can look forward to rustling up tasty home-cooked meals in the well-equipped kitchen, with the help of the electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and a handy dishwasher, so time won’t be wasted doing chores! Gather around the dining table for six as you tuck-into a delicious meal and make plans for the days ahead. Take advantage of the warmer weather and make dinner an alfresco affair out on the private patio as you savour the last of the day’s sunshine. As the evening begins to cool, retreat to the sofa where you can relax with a glass of wine in front of your favourite show on the TV, as the alluring multi-fuel stoves crackles nearby. Completing the ground floor is a well-appointed bathroom, where you can soothe tired feet with an indulgent soak in the bath. Climb the stairs to the first floor, where you will find two beautifully-decorated rooms, a double and a single, both served by a shower room, along with two additional bedrooms, a double and a single which can be found on the second floor, providing ample sleeping arrangements for all parties. Explore the local village where you will find a plethora of welcoming pubs and restaurants right on your doorstep, perfect for those evenings where you don’t feel like cooking! Wander through the 18-inch wide, charmingly named Squeezy Belly Alley, where just over the hill, Doc Martin fans will be able see the home of the character Aunt Ruth, or enjoy a leisurely stroll to Portwenn View, which rests on the scenic South West Coastal Path and where you can soak up some of the best views in the area. Take the short drive over to Polzeath, well-known for its family-friendly beach with glorious golden sands stretching for miles, here you can sunbathe with your favourite book, paddle the shores or take to the waters and try your hand at the local favourite watersport, surfing. Just off the beach is the popular Oystercatcher pub, where you can treat your loved ones to a flavourful meal on the picturesque beach-view terrace. Just a little further is Rock, where you can explore the waters of the River Camel via water skiing, test out your clubs at the historic St Enodoc Golf Club or catch a ferry over to Padstow, where you will find the National Lobster Hatchery, the Camel cycling Trail and the lavish 16th-century Prideaux Place. For a memorable getaway to Cornwall, look no further than The Mizzen.

A real Cornish treasure, Port Isaac. Fishing villages nestled in steep valleys, the old hamlet remains untouched from its days of fishing, exporting slate, and trafficking in smuggled goods in the last century. Near the village's numerous eateries and shops, you'll find a wide variety of charming little homes and larger cliff-top retreats. There are several rock pools to explore in the sandy harbour as the tide goes out. In the heart of Cornwall, it's an ideal location for both romantic getaways and family vacations. Ample parking is available at the village's apex.

Until today, Sunday 19 May 2024 we have had no one reach out to us. We booked this Mizzen property as it was highlighted that it was beautifully refurbished. When we booked the response to the bad reviews was that this was “old news” and now it was sympathetically upgraded. This is a true misrepresentation. it is in areas repainted and yes new furniture has been put in the house. Just spending money on new Cream of Cornwall light shades, crockery, chopping board, sofas and kitchen for them to look good in the pictures for the booking is not going to fool anyone. The overwhelming smell of damp in the property hits you the moment you walk through the door. Not welcoming at all. The garden when we arrived was in an absolutely disgusting and filthy state. The whole garden was full of bird poo, the chairs were found all around the garden and the weeds were well established all settled in the patio slates. Nothing like the description: “The door at the rear of the kitchen leads out to an enclosed patio garden with shrubs and colourful plants – a delightful spot to sit and enjoy a Cornish cream tea or a home cooked meal”. The real situation too filthy to enjoy anything. We spent the first hour of our stay cleaning part of this area and pulling out the established weeds Other points that need attention; 1. The property is super damp, the owners must know this as they provided several damp - soak up kits. We had people suffering from asthma in our group, not acceptable at all 2. On the first day, we could not get the showers to work without scolding ourselves 3. No bath mats are supplied, we had to go and buy our own 4. The front of the property looks uncared for and is full of bird poo 5. The back of the property also uncared for and full of bird poo 6. The previous occupants have highlighted the issue with the handles being all loose, this has not been rectified. The doors do not shut and the handles will fall off if you had to pull a door open 7. General state of the property is poor 8. This is a no smoking property, the garden was full of cigarette butts outside 9. The laundry rack outside is not fit for use, it is in such a bad state of repair 10. The chairs outside look like they have recently been purchased but because no one cared for this they are filthy and full of rust, which you would get on your clothes if you were to use them. 11. Freezer compartment in fridge broken and all iced up - looks like a long term problem 12. The property floor inside was also dirty on arrival 13. Picture of the front of the property is misleading it is actually a semi - detached property 14. The windows in the bathroom could not be secured on the ground floor 15. No basics provided such as loo roll, salt pepper; a starter kit would have been helpful Positives 1. Beds are good and bedding clean ( this was the only reason we stayed) 2. Kitchen. Looks recently upgraded and is indeed well equipped 3. Washing/ drying machine good to use 4. Location excellent in the middle of Port Isaac The marketing information lists; At the end of an exciting day return to The Mizzen to relax, before doing it all over again! We certainly will not stay here again. We shared this property with our Australian friends and feel embarrassed by all points listed and hardly the best Cornwall has to offer. Photos can be provided to support this review upon request.

Obvious damp problem in the main lounge wall with plaster peeling away all across the wall. Need general maintenance on a few small jobs, such as nearly all of the internal door handles are hanging off. Outside appearance of the cottage could be smartened up quite easily.

Well decorated and furnished though master bed bit firm for us. We did have a lot of rain on day one and it flooded the front yard of the cottage, due to blocked drain and water also came into the cottage. Frustrating and smelly, maintenance needed on guttering. We called and John Bray representative got back to me quickly and plumber came out cleared drain within 24hrs. Thank you. They also got the over grown back garden sorted.
